Taking it to Edge, and Jumping Right Off

« Return to Hong Kong & Macau

Back on the platform, I’m thinking about what a great war story this bungee jump will make, about all the people who actually would love to do this but will never get the chance. I think about an editor who requested the article I’ll have to write about this, I think about this jockstrap schmuck who used to intimidate me in high school. Charlie the jump master finally signals it’s time to go. Arms out, fall forward and enjoy the ride. 3…2…1

Insert the BIGGEST MOFO FREAKING SCREAM HERE. 20 seconds of 200km/hr plummet, and then the recoil, and for a second I’m floating, and then insert the SECOND BIGGEST MOFO FREAKING SCREAM HERE. I have a camcorder duct-taped to my hand and all I can think of is relief, it’s over, it’s OH VER! Blood rushes from my feet to my head, turning me into a human beetroot, and I feel like a city that just got nuked only the H-Bomb didn’t detonate. It’s winning the cup, the promotion, the girl and race in the space of three seconds. It takes a minute for the bungee contraption to lower me to the ground below, and my throat is scarred from all the screaming. Holy Gonzo. Hong Kong and Macau. That, my friends, was a rush.
