Life’s a Trampoline in Corfu

Besides flight, this week’s Gonzo madness came in the form of a two-hour paddle to some rocks in the sea. Naturally it was Phillipe’s idea, because I have a shark phobia and would never suggest something that would have me flailing in the water like a piece of bait. Phillipe hunts sharks back home, so I did feel a little confident, providing they weren’t out for revenge. We bought an air mattress and kicked our way out, except Phillipe wasn’t kicking because he wasn’t comfortable with his legs in the water in case of sharks. This he tells me about halfway, an hour from shore. I wanted to kick him, but he urged me to concentrate on reaching safety. There were no sharks, or fish for that matter, and instead we had to make do with the colour of the water and the nudists on the distant shore, covering themselves with mud.

Later, we gathered some new friends and made a fire on the beach, counting shooting stars and making plans to meet up in French Polynesia, or perhaps, India. Traveling solo is fun and all, but I’m going to miss having a smiling, charming French guy at my side. He was essential for good stories, the long transits, the Gonzo pictures, and certainly for the ladies. Au Revoir Pepe!

Rock jumping and mud baths, nightly karaoke after too many beers, people from different countries going different places. The “go go go” had finally seeped out my nerves, the few deep breaths have done me good. My flight leaves for Budapest on August 2nd and this “holiday” is over. After a few weeks traveling along the coast from Croatia to Greece, the Old Town squares, museums and majestic cathedrals of Eastern Europe once again draw me near. It was wise, if a little inconvenient, to break up the capitals with coastline, avoiding an indistinguishable blend of either. With an outrageous tan, a rescued haircut and the memory of incredible sunsets, Modern Gonzo continues solo to Hungary.
