A Glacier Runs Through It
The Franz Josef Glacier rolling down the mountain, half a metre a day. The glacier has retreated several kilometres, as can be seen by the rocks where it once cut through the valley. It was discovered by an Austrian explorer in the 1800's and named after his king. Maori legend refers to it as "Tears of the Avalanche Girl"
