Welcome to Chichen Itza
On the shortlist for the new Wonders of the World, the Mayan pyramid temple at Chichen Itza is something to behold. The structure acts as a cosmically accurate calendar, and twice a year, the shadow of a snake slithers down the stairs in honour of the Mayan serpent god. In January, 2006, a US tourist fell and killed herself on the stairs. Tourists are no longer allowed to climb to the top, but if they clap on the bottom, they will hear this weird echo sound.
