View Photos for: Carnaval, Pantanal, and a little bit of Rio State

My third visit to vibrant Brazil finally takes me inside the Sambadrome and on the streets for Rio’s famous Carnaval. But there’s still time for a visit to the Pantanal, the world’s largest wetland, for the wildlife, waterfalls, and some unforgettable caving and river adventures. Click on the pics for more info.

A few years later, I return to Brazil, and return to my roots. Partying in the samba bars in Sao Paulo, finally getting my photo with the Christ in Rio, the favela, the friends. Unseasonal El Nino rain does hurt, but the sun pops on the beaches of Ilha Grande, and down south in Florianapolis, the Gringo Circles are supreme. Click on the pics for more info.

View Photos for: Salvador, Morro de Sao Paulo

Salvador literally throbs with its distasteful past as the port that welcomed more African slaves than any other in the world. The old town of Pelourinho is full of churches and charm, with the undeniable edge of exotic danger found in most African cities. By contrast, the tropical island of Morro de Sao Paulo, a bumpy boat ride away, is postcard perfect. If the sea didn’t destroy my camera, I would have a lot more to show you. View Photos for: Olinda, Recife

It’s a colonial town dating back to the 15th century, where every house is painted a different colour, church spires create the skyline and the narrow streets still contain some of its original cobble. Drums flow into the night, local characters peer out of their windows, and storms coat the streets in romance. Click on the pics for more info.

View Photos for: Jericoacoara, Brazil

A slice of beach paradise, Jericoacoara is a small village accessible only by a 4×4 bus. Crystal lagoons, big sandy dunes, lazy hammock afternoons, capoeira and famous sunsets. Guitar and bongos provide the soundtrack for exploding palm trees, dune buggy adventures, horsing around, early morning beach parties and pure tranquility in this little slice of tropical heaven in northern Brazil. View Photos for: Iguazu Falls, Hangglidding in Rio

I felt like Indiana Gonzo walking along the jungle catwalks to one of the most spectacular sights in all South America - the 275 waterfalls that create Iguazu Falls on the borders of Argentina and Brazil. Taking in some exotic wildlife, I make my way to Rio for some beach, World Cup football and an unforgetable glide through the sky. Click on the pics for more info.

  • Flying Doctors and the Migration of the Wildebeest

This week in East Africa, I discover two sides to a coin. The luxury, beauty and exotic wildlife of the ultimate safari, complete with butlers, five-star tents, and the migration of the wildebeest. In Nairobi, a different story, as I take to the air with the Flying Doctors, participating in a medical evacuation, and seeing the human cost of violence. This is Africa, and there is nowhere else like it.

  • Heat, Dust and Dirt Bikes in Egypt

The traffic, chaos and 3000 years of bureaucracy take their toll, but I manage to Belly Dance over the Nile anyway. After clocking in at the pyramids, it’s off to the Sinai to rock the desert by ATV, dirt bike and dune buggy. Egypt has stayed much the same since my last visit 16 years ago. I haven’t.

  • A Revolution in Cuba

Plenty of thoughts about this controversial island in the Caribbean, where tourists are herded into all-inclusive resorts while the songs of Revolution still stir. When you add a large group of journalists, expect something in the middle in this gonzo-fuelled rant about the beating heart of change.
